STOP THE STRIFE!!!!

From: The Emotion Machine

The founder of Saddleback Church, Rick Warren, shared a story from his book "The Purpose Driven Church", and I quote:
"In the early days of Saddleback Church, we faced a major crisis. A group of members, dissatisfied with our growth strategy, began to criticize and divide the congregation.
One Sunday, a leader in the opposition stood up during a service and publicly denounced me and our vision. The tension was palpable. After the service, I was devastated. But then I remembered a phrase from 1 Corinthians 12:22 - "The weaker parts of the body are indispensable." I realized that even those who opposed me were still part of the body of Christ. I chose to forgive and reached out to the critic. We met for breakfast, and I listened to his concerns. I acknowledged his pain and validated his feelings. Slowly, he began to see our shared purpose. We worked together to address the issues, and eventually, he became a key partner in our ministry".
He said this experience taught him that unity is not about uniformity, but about embracing our diversity as the body of Christ.
This morning, I received a profound revelation through a Yoruba phrase, 'Ede Ayedi,' meaning 'confused language.' It reminded me of the biblical account in Genesis 11, where humanity united to build the Tower of Babel. Their solidarity and determination impressed even God, who acknowledged that nothing would be impossible for them. However, God introduced a divisive factor - confusing their language - which shattered their unity and scattered them across the earth.
Now in the heart of the Church, a silent destroyer lurked, threatening to dismantle the very foundations of faith. It's name was Strife, and it feeds on discord, disagreement, and division, something that'll look little on the outside yet it's breaking down churches standing for decades. Strife's presence was subtle, often masquerading as righteous indignation or passionate conviction. But its true nature was revealed in the whispers of gossip, the sting of criticism, and the chill of indifference.
It isn't a novel thing since it has happened all over the Holy Scriptures.
1. Moses and the ISRAELITES:
The church in the wilderness under the papacy of Moses, they had a lot of disagreement that led to the anger of God upon them, the story of Moses and the Israelites in the wilderness served as a stark reminder of Strife's destructive power. Aaron's rebellion, Korah's defiance, and the people's constant grumbling had tested God's patience and Moses' leadership. Yet, amidst the turmoil, God's presence remained steadfast. He guided Moses to establish a covenant of peace, reminding the Israelites that unity was their greatest strength.
2. The Church at Corinth.
The Apostle Paul, witnessing similar strife in the Corinthian Church, penned a heartfelt plea: "I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought" (1 Corinthians 1:10).

I genuinely believe that diversity in perspectives and preferences is a natural aspect of human relationships. When disagreements arise, especially regarding leadership decisions, it's crucial to address concerns directly with leaders or elders instead of spreading dissent or taking sides. This approach helps maintain unity and prevents strife.
The biblical account of Aaron's appointment as leader of the priests illustrates this point. When his leadership was disputed, God intervened with a miracle, making Aaron's rod bud to reaffirm His choice. This story highlights the importance of seeking divine guidance and confirmation in times of uncertainty.
Even small disagreements can escalate into major conflicts, as seen in Acts 6. The apostles' wise decision to establish the ministry of deacons resolved the issue, preventing a potential Jews vs. Gentiles fight. This example emphasizes the need for effective conflict resolution and peacemaking.
Jesus' words in Matthew 5:9 remind us, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God." Peacemakers actively listen, seek common ground, and bridge gaps. They prioritize unity over personal interests.

Quick self reflective questions.
Do you notice Strife lurking in your own life?
Do you think you can be a peacemaker, bridging gaps and fostering unity?
What biblical principles guide your interactions with others, especially in times of disagreement?
Do you think you are fueling and encouraging strife by your acts and attitude?

HOW CAN YOU HELP?
1. Practice active listening and empathy.
2. Seek common ground and compromise.
3. Prioritize unity over personal preferences.
4. Encourage open communication and constructive feedback.
5. Address concerns with leaders or elders instead of spreading dissent.
6. Pray for wisdom and reassurance in times of uncertainty.
7. Pray for the Church’s unity and strength.

I hope this helps us in recognizing and resisting Strife's influence, embracing the power of unity and peacemaking in your own life and the church community.
